Jo Pocock, Becky Barnett and Gavin Lewery, have been working closely with the Art Department at Childwall School and Year 7, 8 and 9 students, on an ambitious public sculpture project, which has been jointly designed by the students and Lantern Company artists as part of Curious Mind’s SLiCE programme (Specialist Leaders in Cultural Education), which aims to promote cultural education within schools in the northwest of England.
Following a 2 day design residency, where students designed their own imaginary hybrid animals, inspired by the diverse cultures and languages spoken by pupils, the designs have been turned into larger than life wooden figures, which the children will paint during a further week long residency. The animals are to be incorporated into the finished sculpture, a giant golden tree installed in the grounds of the school as a celebration of the creativity and rich cultural diversity of Childwall’s pupils.
