The Lantern Company working with partners Nigel Jamieson and Aarhus 2017 have delivered a spectacularly large scale Lantern Parade, as part of the opening celebrations for Aarhus as it kicked off its year as European Capital of Culture on Saturday 21st January 2017
The Lantern Parade involved thousands of local people as it streamed through the city to the docks, finishing with an epic waterside finale and mass street party. Audiences were in the region of 70,000.
The event is the culmination of a 6 month creative partnership, which included an intensive residency at Aarhus Architecture School, workshops with local children and residents, and collaborations with scores of national artists, boat builders, colleges, community and volunteering programmes to create 6 giant Viking Lantern Ships and some very precious cargo.
The design/make and technical team included: Jo Pocock, Caroline Scott, Jackie Swanson, Ewan Hunter, Gavin Lewery, Kevin Carrol, Ger Sweeney, Eilidh Bryan, Colin Eccleston, Rob Hill, Simon Banks, Noah Rose and Georgina Solo.
